I worked for the Durkins from around Oct 1969 until Sept 1977. I was just out of the Army and back from Vietnam and the Durkins gave me a job. I was a hand full back then and made more mistakes than the average guy. One story out of many is; I was on my way to work running late as I often did, when i got a speeding ticket for 74 in a 30. It was on the radio and Drew heard it, he say something like; " what a jackass that guy was." I was at the window getting more delivery orders and said; " boy what a jerk the speeder was." Well I should've kept my mouth shut. Drew look over at me; and said it wasn't you was it I said yes, I didn't want to be late. Drew said if you ever got a ticket like that in one of my trucks; I would all done working for him. again my big mouth, I said, "it will never happen because your truck only will go about 68 mph. At that point, Jimmy handed me more delivery orders and said, " go, leave now!" As I looked back I think I saw smoke coming out of Drew's ears. Good people to work . RIP Boss.

P.S. I heard Drew say more than once I have 7 kids an Shugie!

I find it both ironic and sad, that in this technology era in which people have perfected "impersonal communication" through one gadget or another, that we have lost a man who accomplished so much through a firm handshake,looking you in the eye and taking an interest in what you had to say. Rest In Peace Uncle Drew, you will be missed.

"Is that right?" That's the phrase I most associate with my Uncle Drew. Sometimes, I think, he meant it ironically. Sometimes mockingly. Sometimes as a challenge. And, also, sometimes he meant it sincerely. In my experience, he was a man of few words, and many of those few words could be taken in many different ways. He kept me on my toes, and liked to tease, and I appreciated that. Even if I didn't always know what he meant by, "Is that right?', here's what I know for sure: He worked hard. He was honest. He was a patriot. He had opinions. He was stubborn. He was independent. He was kind of shy. He had good manners. He had good morals. He loved my Aunt Maureen beyond measure. He loved and was proud of all my Durkin cousins and all the Durkin grandchildren. He loved God. He built a business. He built a family. He lived a long life. He lived a good life. If he were reading this, he might tilt his head and ask, "Is that right?" And I'd have to reply: "Yeah, Uncle Drew; that's right. You did well. You left a legacy. You will be remembered."

My deepest sympathy to Maureen and the entire Durkin Family during this most difficult time. Drew walked this life with great faith, a great love for his family and friends, displaying a quick wit and a great sense of humor. I will always remember his smile and his devotion to his family, his faith and the community. He truly was a gentleman in every sense of the word and for those of us who knew him we remain blessed to have had him in our life. Drew, rest in peace in the loving arms of our Lord.
